Original Home Theater
This page describes the home theater at our previous home in
Dallas. Lots of the parts were swiped for our new, dedicated
home theater room, and now the big-screen Mitsubishi is in the living room
with only a satellite receiver and a DVD player connected to it. Hardly a home
theater anymore. But back in 1998, it was the center-piece in my first true home
theater.
Home Theater
This shows the speaker size, along with the IR receivers for both my
wireless keyboard and HTPC remote control. |
You can definitely tell how small the speakers are here. You can also
see all the extra junk decorations my wife has all over
the place. Luckily, she's removed all of the noisier items that used to
vibrate and rattle up there. |
This is one of the rear surround speakers mounted near the ceiling.
The rear speakers are identical to the fronts. |
| Mitsubishi VS-50703 50" Rear Projection |
Back in 1998, I couldn't dream of affording an HDTV, so I
went for a high quality RPTV that wouldn't break the bank. Component video
was the one feature I had to have, for the best possible non-digital DVD
picture, and this model fit the bill. |
| Denon AVR 2700 Dolby Digital Receiver |
I wanted something better than the Sonys and Pioneers
available at Best Buy and Circuit City. After lots of research, this is
what I ended up with. This was right before DTS started going mainstream,
so that is one feature I'm still without today, but this receiver has been
great. |

I just learned the term W.A.F. (Wife Acceptance
Factor)
today, and that is definitely why I ended up with these diminutive
speakers. Michelle hated my old giant speakers, and getting rid of them
was the catalyst for purchasing all my new equipment back in 1998.
for a review of these small, but excellent sounding speakers. I don't
have the same subwoofer as in the review, but an upgraded 10" model.
(Originally I thought W.A.F meant Wild-Ass Foosball.) |
| Toshiba
SD-3109 Dual-Disc DVD Player |
To get the big feature I was looking for (component video),
I had to buy one of the higher-end DVD players of the day. Originally, I
bought a Sony, but hated the remote and a couple of other things about it
and soon returned it and got this Toshiba. This has a built-in Dolby
Digital decoder that I don't use, because my receiver does that. I use the
dual-disc tray more often
than I would have guessed, and this unit has been a solid performer over
the years. See my DVD library here. |
| Toshiba 4-Head VCR |
Nothing special here. Rarely used now. |
| Sony 5-disc Carousel CD Changer |
One of the oldest functioning electronic components in my
possession. |

Having this is like living in space! I've got a separate page dedicated to this high-tech wonder. |
